Carolina Handball Team Grabs Top Spot
By Jennifer Maness
Carolina’s handball team played Air Force
in the semi-finals. The game was heated, and
thanks to strong play by sophomore Alex McGlynn,
the Tar Heels came out on top, 17-15.
The final game pitted Carolina against the
2003 champion, West Point. McGlynn says West
Point brought its A game.
“Those West Point guys, they're just,
you know, used to working out everyday,” McGlynn
says. “They're in great physical condition,
and we stuck with them and hit them just as
hard as they were hitting us, so we played a
good game.”
After two halves of intense defense and show-stopping
scoring, Carolina took the 2006 national championship,
20-13. Wade Sutton says it made his senior year
complete.
“Three-peating as college national champions,
we've never done that before,” Sutton
says. “Until we won one three years ago
we'd never done that, either. Just going out
and winning three in a row is just something
that I don't know if we'll ever do again.”
Looks like Fetzer Gym will be boasting a new
banner.
