Fraternity Hosts Sleepout for the Homeless
By Michael Abramowitz
Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity has a 20-year tradition
of concern for the homeless. The fraternity
collects student donations for area homeless
shelters, and wants to do more.
Fraternity brothers pitched tents on the basketball
court outside Craige Residence Hall Friday night
and invited students to a sleepout to raise
awareness of this social issue.
They served food and refreshments and talked
with visitors about how much they have compared
with the poor and hungry. Senior Matthew Wynter
says events like this show what his fraternity
is all about.
“We can’t be men of service, and
we can’t be college students at the same
time,” Wynter said, “and not recognize
that there are plagues in our community that
we can’t alleviate, by any means, but
we can definitely help.”
Alpha Phi Alpha collected more than $300 for
the Interfaith Council, but members say the
real success was that the big turnout on a busy
Friday night shows how important the issue of
homelessness is to UNC students.
