| Flame
of Hope
By Caitlin Clinard
Friday marked the beginning of North Carolina’s
Special Olympics in Raleigh. And the lighting
of the cauldron will officially start the summer
games.
Philip Chall carried the torch Wednesday. In
total, the Flame of Hope traveled almost 2,000
miles, hitting nearly every county in the state.
All North Carolina law enforcement agencies
sponsored the torch run. Last year, the Chapel
Hill police department led all other agencies
in fund raising, bringing in almost $1 billion
for the Special Olympics. On Wednesday morning,
runners started in Carrboro and ended up at
the Outback in Durham.
All participants in the Special Olympics abide
by the oath: Let me win. But if I cannot win,
let me be brave in the attempt.
