West House Conflict Continues
By Jerri Simmons

For three years, conflict ensued about University Official's handling of The West House. The West House is a small building adjacent to the Evergreen house and close to the Hanes Art Center. It serves as the current home for the Carolina Asia Center.

The house must be emptied by mid June and inside boxes are packed. John Huere is an architectural designer at UNC and a member of the West House Coalition. He said the West House is his favorite space on the campus. He just hopes for a good outcome.

“My ideal outcome would be a change of heart on the administration, that there is no reason to antagonize a thousand citizens and faculty and staff and students. If there is no conflict with the building staying here, appropriate landscaping could shield any perceived conflicts in style, with the proposed new music building over here, there is just no reason why it has to come down,” Huere said.

Huere said this building is full of history and there’s still a chance. Demolition is set for this summer.
