Historic Homes in Carrboro Takes Center Stage
By Jerri Simmons

The Historic Preservation/Appearance Commission wants to highlight historical property in Carrboro.

Some Carrboro homes are historic buildings, like Catherine Devine’s house. She’s closely associated with the Carrboro Appearance Commission.

Devine’s historic house was built in 1920. The age of the house, whether it was built before 1931, and how well it is maintained are big factors in deciding if the property is historic.

Devine said that all adds up to make Carrboro Special. “I have a tremendous fondness for Carrboro’s history. You don’t find many small towns that adore themselves as much as Carrboro does. And this is one aspect of that, the architectural history is a testament to the rest of Carrboro’s history.”

The Commission wants to highlight historic properties such as these, and wants to update the historic building registry for the city of Carrboro. The Commission has identified about 80 buildings that pre-date 1931.
