Day in Carrboro
By Wil Weldon
For Carrboro residents, Memorial Day means working
for peace.
About 40 people gathered for an hour-long service
at the Farmer’s Market to honor fallen
soldiers and to mourn those killed by violence
worldwide. Several groups of singers performed
and Mayor Mark Chilton issued a proclamation
for the day.
Participants read the names of soldiers who
died in the previous week. Candles, caskets
and the flags of several nations was a powerful
reminder of the effects of violence.
Reverend Maria Palmer, the service leader
said, “I think it’s a good use of
the holiday to come here with these people who
are actively seeking to curb violence in the
world.”
The Orange County Peace Coalition sponsored
the non-denominational event.
