J.J. Redick Arrested
By Jerri Simmons

Things have been somewhat unpleasant on the Duke campus because of rape allegations involving the lacrosse team. Now another athlete is in trouble. Former Duke Basketball guard J.J. Redick is known for his skills on the court. Police arrested Redick early Tuesday on charges of driving drunk in Durham.

University students haven’t been fond of Redick during his playing days, but most of them aren’t kicking him when he’s down. Mark Olexik, a journalism major at UNC said he was at work when he heard about J.J. He says that this is something that won’t hurt Duke’s reputation.

“ J.J. was obviously a big name during basketball season, but I think this too shall pass. This happens to a lot of guys his age; I think people will get past it fairly quickly,” he said.

Junior, Christopher Barnes says this was a stupid mistake.

“ Any DWI can be avoided by asking a friend to take you home, or not driving home drunk,” said Barnes.

He says he doesn’t think this will affect Redick’s standing for the NBA Draft. Alan Norman is an art major, and he says his Tar Heel spirit makes this just a bit sweet.

“It doesn’t make me happy but I guess it kind of does you know, one up on Duke,” he said.

Redick was released from Durham County Jail on $1,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in a Durham court July 17th.
