Overcrowded Schools
By Ashley Perryman

On Thursday a committee will determine how many Orange County elementary school students will have to switch schools in August.

At the Lincoln center in Carrboro, the maps are piling up as administrators attempt to come to a decision. The plan will move as few as 26 students or as many as 127. The 10th elementary school in Orange County to open in two years will prompt the redistribution of thousands of students.
Assistant Superintendent Steve Scroggs said the first small move is necessary, despite how close we are to massive redistribution.

“You've got to move some kids. But it comes down to is it okay to let one school run 60 kids over capacity when another is running 60 under capacity? Is it okay to let that go on for two or three more years? I think the board's response would be no,” he said.

A single trailer used as an extra classroom costs $75,000. Scroggs says this move will save local taxpayers from having to pay for extra trailers.
