Controversial Flip Flops
By Caitlin Clinard

Professional surfer Mick Flanning and Reef Flip Flops have teamed up to bring you a new product. But even though it’s selling fast, it’s stirred up some controversy.

From the front, the flip flops look like any other on the market. But when you turn them over, you’ll find a surprise, a bottle opener. And unless you’re looking for the old-fashioned coca-cola bottles, the only thing we could find that needed a bottle opener was beer and malt liquor. And with a young target audience, some say these flip flops encourage under-aged drinking. Surf shop manager, Chris Jackson, agrees that might be a problem.

“It probably does encourage it but as stringent as the laws are, I know some kids are going to be able to get whatever they want whenever they want but its going to be hard for the kids because of the drinking laws,” he said.

If you’re looking for these flip flops, you can find them at South Point Mall and other sports stores for $47.
