Pedicabs on the Loose
By Wil Weldon

People now have a new environment friendly way to get around town. When you see little white trikes around Chapel Hill and Carrboro, thanks can go to the folks at SURGE, Carolina's student environmental group. These bicycle taxis are called Pedi-cabs and fares range from two to five or six bucks a person.

The idea is like rickshaws used in India, but Chapel Hill's version aims to reduce greenhouse gases. UNC alumnus Dennis Markatos-Soriano started Greenway Pedicabs and recalls his first ride in early July.

“I had a couple of great people, even though they weren't Carolina alumni -- they had graduated from State -- but it was great to give them a ride around town and to show them all the different places that I've been to, and they really enjoyed it, so it was awesome to give,” Markatos-Soriano said.

Twenty-five percent of the pedi-cabs’ profit goes to SURGE. The group is still in need of more drivers, who will be trained before driving. The group may be reached through greenwaypedicabs.com or at (919) 951-8158 if you want a ride.
