Smoke Kills
By Wil Weldon

New data released this week project one billion people will die this century from cigarette smoking. That’s 10 times the number to die last century from smoke-related illnesses, according to World Health Organization sources.

Even with smoker numbers on the decline, population growth would keep fatalities rising. Stopping smoking is a sure way to prevent cancer and lung disease, but many young people still think moderation is okay.

Brian Higginbotham, an occasional smoker, said, “I am – I am concerned about lung cancer and I’m trying my best to quit… yeah, and I don’t smoke very much. But, I do enjoy it when I go out. But, on a day-to-day basis, I don’t smoke.”

Studies also show that smoking accounts for one in five cancer deaths.
