Really Free Market
By Kathryn Harrell

Imagine a market where everything is free. That is exactly the case for Carrboro’s Really Free market that took place on Saturday.

The market is a place where one person’s trash could be another person’s treasure. People bring items from home to give away for free.

Among the things you can find at the market are clothes, books and appliances. Freed food is even available.
Emily Gordon is a Carrboro resident that attends the market regularly.

“I have come this for close to a year. I think it’s probably one of the nicest things that could be done. I think that it’s a true Carrboro event and the market is really, really free. Anything can be put out and can be given away to anyone in the community that feels a need for it,” says Gordon.

The market is a way of recycling or trading. Monica Ganguly is one of the planners for the event.

“Basically the idea is that people sort of call for a free market and set a time and place and invite everybody to come and bring anything that they have that they don’t want anymore and that they want to give away for free and people can take anything that’s there,” says Ganguly.

The market originated in larger cities and recently came to Carrboro, but originally, it wasn’t held on a regular basis. Now the market takes place monthly for people to enjoy.
