LEDs are transforming lights?
By Jerri Simmons

When you think about the light industry you might think about incandescent or fluorescent lights. But, a new light is transforming this industry.

Sir’tauria Hilliard said she thinks about lights most when she changes a bulb.

“You turn the switch off, so you won’t burn your hands, and then you unscrew it and then you get a new one and you screw a new one,” she said.

The process she describes is something Americans have done for years with incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs. But if you look at this cell phone or traffic light you’ll notice LEDs or Light emitting Diodes.

LEDs aren’t just used for big technologies outside of the home. In fact, LED lights have been in the home in the form of electronics. LEDs form the numbers in digital clocks and are located at the tip of most remote controls.

There are several advantages to LED lights

Advantages of LEDs:

-Power efficient

-Has a long life span.

-Fails by dimming over time.

-Gives off less heat.

-Lights up quickly.

If you’re thinking of replacing your current bulbs with LEDs, you may want to think again. LEDs can replace incandescent and flourescent light bulbs in the house, but that requires a power source conversion in household applications, and this can be expensive.
Lois Lewis says she would be willing to try LED lights if the costs decrease.

“Well, I like to try different things, I would try them to see how they worked, and if they didn’t work as well as I thought they should or do what I thought it ought to do then I would go back to my old ones,” said Lewis.

Proponents of LEDs expect that technological advances will reduce costs so that these lights can be introduced into most homes by 2020. But for now you can find most LEDs used in electronics and used as indicator signals.
