Carolina
Moves on to NCAA Quarterfinals
by Aaron Mesmer
The second-ranked Carolina women's soccer team
survived an early 1-0 deficit to come back and
beat Tennessee 3-1 and advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals.
The crowd of 3,031 saw the Lady Volunteers (18-6-1)
grab the early momentum and the early lead on
Tara Minnax's fourth goal of the season. After
the goal, the Tar Heels' defense would clamp down
on the Vols, not allowing them a shot on goal
for the final 72:49 of play.
UNC (20-1-4) finally broke through when Alyssa
Ramsey fed Catherine Reddick a pass into the penalty
kicks area in front of the goal. The converted
defender's sixth goal of the season tied it at
one.
With one minute left in the first half freshman
Lindsay Tarpley put the Heels up 2-1 on a pass
from Reddick. The goal was her 15th of the year.
At the 17:32 mark, Ramsey added an insurance goal
off the post. UNC Coach Anson Dorrance said Ramsey
bends the ball well enough to use the posts when
she shoots.
"That
was not an accident," he said. "We saw her prepare
it, look up and then deliberately bend it back
post. That is absolutely world class."
Carolina would go on to win 3-1 and will take
on #5 Texas A&M who upset #3 UCLA Saturday. The
game will be played Friday at 3 p.m. at Fetzer
Field.
